Illustrated Playing Card
Since the first release of his Illustrated Playing Cards in November 2010, he’s been drawing the great cities of the world. All the drawings for all his decks of cards are originally sketched on location without the aid of a photograph. The drawings are completed with pen and ink (and sometimes watercolor) in Portland, Oregon at Alberta Studios (1627 NE Alberta St.) The suits and numbers on all the cards are an original hand-drawn border template created for Illustrated Playing Cards. Boxes are digitally printed and die-cut. Each box is signed, numbered, and folded by the artist. Cards are digital prints with a UV coating. They are cut square, round-cornered and shrink-wrapped in Portland, OR.
His process involves walking around looking at everything, trying to find good vantage points, at comfortable angles. As an artist who sketches en plein air as a painter of older times, his creative activity is sometimes challenged by atmospheric conditions like heavy rain and random tour group mobs. It is his hope that the drawings on these cards evoke a sentiment of each great city. This is not just a deck of cards; it can be played or displayed like a gallery-in-a-box, or a pocket cathedral. He considers it a gift to the people who live in the city, a souvenir for visitors; a token of a special place.
